The Drone bee has no father, but does have a grandfather! Each & every time! Here’s how it works:

  • Queen bees can mate with a Drone to produce fertilized eggs
  • Fertilized eggs always become new Queens, or Workers, but never Drones
  • Queen bees can lay unfertilized eggs
  • Unfertilized eggs always become new Drones

So Queens always have a mother & a father (as do workers). Drones however, only have a mother, and as relationships have it, a grandfather.

Thanks to all those who took guesses at the answer! No one got it right, but there was plenty of creative thinking!

Special thanks to Ed McNierney for sharing this with me.
